Saudi owner and charterer Vela International helped keep VLCC rates out of the Gulf down today fixing two more tankers into the US Gulf at Worldscale (WS) 45.



Vela will take the 303,129-dwt Safwa (built 2002) off 19 August and BW Shipping’s newbuild, the 301,019-dwt BW Bauhinia (built 2007), off 14 August.



Though BP was paying WS 65 for modern tonnage on the same trip earlier in the week, the fixtures appear to firm up the new, lower rate.
