The US government has fined a Greek ship operator $2.25m for having a ship with a broken inert-gas system.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) levied the penalty against Zeus Lines Management for sailing the 50,057-dwt product tanker Galissas (built 2008) off Rhode Island with the inoperable kit, which keeps oxygen levels within the tanks at a safe level.

In a separate infraction, Zeus and its chief engineer admitted illegal discharges of oily bilge water.
