Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding has been tipped as the winner of Evergreen Marine’s neo-panamax containership newbuildings worth more than $1.8bn.

Shipbuilding players say the Higaki family’s controlled shipyard managed to outdo Japan Marine United, Taiwan’s CSBC Corp, and South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries to secure the business. The deal is for 10 firm vessels of 11,000 teu plus 10 options.
