Significant savings can be made immediately from low-carbon vessels as Europe introduces taxes and restrictions on carbon-based bunkers, according to shipowner Alexander Saverys.
The chief executive of Euronav and Compagnie Maritime Belge reminded delegates at a capital markets day that from this month, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme means vessels will have to pay for emissions just as the cement or steel industries have been doing for some time.
