At least 10 crew were missing on Wednesday after a collision between two general cargoships off Shanghai.
The incident on Tuesday night involved vessels named as Xinwang 138 and Chang Ping, The Paper reported.
Chang Ping was carrying 5,000 tonnes of steel and attempting to anchor when it was in collision with Xinwang 138, which sank.
The Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration is coordinating search and rescue operations.
