Viking Line has claimed a first for passengerships in the wind propulsion arena.

It said its 58,000-gt ro-pax Viking Grace (built 2013) has become the first ferry to add a Rotor Sail.

The kit is produced by Finland's Norsepower and claims to cut fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions by up to 900 tonnes annually.

The 24-metre rotor is a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship.
