Rates for larger boxships have risen to healthy levels this year. Containerships of about 8,500 teu are commanding $30,000 per day, and vessels in the much-maligned classic panamax class of 4,250 teu are earning $15,000 per day.

But increasingly there are signs that this is as far as the market will go — for now at least.

Part of the explanation is that this year's boxship market recovery has been “distinctly lopsided”, according to Maritime Strategies International (MSI) analyst Daniel Richards.
