Japan hits back after greens rubbish its plan to cut emissions

The Japanese government has defended its plan to reduce shipping’s greenhouse gas emissions after it was attacked by a green lobby group.

Japan’s proposal to the IMO is that the trading fleet should adopt minimum efficiency levels under an energy efficiency index for existing ships known as EEXI.

The idea is that to achieve the EEXI efficiency levels, ships should adopt technical or operational efficiency measures or apply a voluntary engine power limitation (EPL).
