The US Coast Guard will hold the first public hearing next month to probe the sinking of TOTE Maritime’s ro-ro El Faro off the Bahamas.

The agency said the nine-day hearing will probe pre-accident events leading to the loss, the regulatory compliance record of the ship, and the search and rescue operation.

The Maritime Board of Investigation will ultimately seek to determine factors that contributed to the accident and “whether there is evidence that any act of misconduct, inattention to duty, negligence or wilful violation of the law on the part of any licensed or certificated person contributed to the casualty,” the US Coast Guard said today.
