An investigation has begun into the accident on the 2,646-teu ANL Benalla (built 2006).at the port of Lyttelton on Friday morning.
The worker is currently in a stable condition in Christchurch hospital undergoing tests.
The ship will stay in port for the time being to cooperate with the probe.
