Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has expanded its containership fleet by chartering five 12,200-teu newbuildings on a long-term basis.

Shipbuilding players said the Swiss liner company is behind the charter of Seaspan Corp’s neo-panamax containerships, which the boxship owner disclosed this week.

Seaspan said it has ordered the 12,200-teu vessels on the back of an 18-year time charter. However, it did not disclose the name of the charterer or the shipyard.
