With the winter’s Covid-19 outbreak in its rearview mirror, Kirby sees momentum building as utilisation picks up in its marine business.

The Houston-based company posted a $17.4m profit for the first three months of 2022, turning around a loss of $4.3m a year earlier. The earnings equated to $0.29 per sahre, beating analyst estimates of $0.27.

The performance was hurt by crewing issues due to the Omicron variant in January and February, which dragged its marine earnings of $356m for the quarter down by $0.10
