Japanese owner MOL is continuing its drive into the digital future with a new "augmented reality" (AR) trial for its ships.

The experimental system supports voyage operations with kit developed by Furuno Electric and MOL Techno-Trade.

It will be tested on a newbuilding VLCC, Suzukasan, due to be delivered on Friday, before moving to car carriers.

AIS data like nearby ship locations and landmarks like buoys at sea can be overlaid on tablets and other displays, without the need for any futuristic glasses developed by a certain search engine giant.
