The US has moved quickly to release another 10.15m barrels of oil from its strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) — and more may be on the way.

The department of energy said on Friday that the low-sulphur fuel was sold to companies including Norway’s Equinor and Anglo-Dutch oil major Shell, plus Valero and Macquarie.

The deal was part of president Joe Biden’s previously announced plan to sell 180m barrels to fight high petrol prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
