A Bulgarian crew member died of asphyxiation on a bulker in France earlier this month. The 52-year-old fell from a ladder into the cargo hold of the 43,000–dwt Stara Planina (built 2007) off Saint-Nazaire on 2 August.

A post-mortem has confirmed carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) had earlier agreed new measures to help combat the problem of seafarers entering spaces with a poisonous atmosphere.
