It was the charity’s first such event in the Greek capital. The main purpose of the evening was to raise scholarship funds for two Greek students from financially struggling families to study at UK maritime schools, said Sailor Society director of fund-raising Jan Webber.
British Ambassador to Greece John Kittmer praised the local shipping community’s turnout at the event. “This is a period where shipping isn’t loved in every quarter — I find this unjust,” he said.
