Sea-Land CEO sees salary rise, while APL boss takes pay cut

The heads of leading US liner companies American President Lines (APL) and Sea-Land experienced very different compensation developments in the period 1994-1995. While Sea-Land president and CEO John Clancey enjoyed a 13.7 per cent wage hike, APL CEO and president George Hayashi - also recently appointed chairman of APC parent American President Cos (APC) - had to swallow a 17.5 per cent slash in his pay packet.

Clancey's basic salary increased 14 per cent to USD 409,884, while his

bonus and other compensation rose from USD 276,700 in 1994 to USD

313,000 last year, for a total compensation package of USD 722,894.

Clancey, who received his entire bonus in the form of shares in parent

company CSX, has also built up a reserve of stock options - currently

worth USD 592,200 - awarded to him since 1987.

According to a recently released proxy statement from APC, Hayashi's

basic salary for 1995 was USD 365,040, unchanged from the year before.
