China has designed and will build the world’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) ship after a swathe of developers in other countries have spent years trying to realise a marine application for the technology.

The CNG ship has been ordered by CIMC Enric SJZ Gas, a Chinese-Indonesia partnership that won the engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the pilot vessel, at China’s Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry.
