Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has got its foot in the door at the 2M alliance but will not become a full member alongside Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co.
The South Korean owner announced on Sunday that it has established a cooperative relationship with 2M.
It follows a period of uncertainty for HMM over whether it could find a home as the world's liner alliances were redrawn and rivals consolidated the market.
