A review of pilot-related ship casualties has revealed that protection and indemnity insurers faced liabilities of $1.82bn from 1,046 incidents between 1999 and 2019.

The review, carried out by the International Group of P&I Clubs, showed that, on average, there were 52 pilot-related casualties per year, with an average cost of $1.74m for each incident.

Allision incidents represented the largest share of the insurance costs, amounting to $1.14bn
