Samsung Heavy Industries is now the seventh company to apply for US Coast Guard approval for its ballast water treatment system.

Samsung's product, marketed under the name Purimar, has already met International Maritime Organisation approval. It is also accepted under the US Coast Guard's alternative management system, which is the interim measure for meeting US ballast water treatment rules.

So far, the US Coast Guard has given approval to systems from five manufacturers: Optimarin, Alfa Laval, OceanSaver, Sunrui, and Ecochlor.
