A series of storms affecting Japan have disrupted efforts to contain a major oil spill from an NYK Line-controlled bulk carrier which grounded and split in two at the port of Hachinohe.

The 49,500-dwt woodchip carrier Crimson Polaris (built 2006) grounded in heavy weather outside the Japanese port before breaking in two.

Fuel oil from the vessel has now been reported hitting the shore at the city of Misawa, north of the site of the accident.
