British Columbia Ferry Services has awarded a contract for four battery electric-hybrid ferries from Damen Shipyards after ordering two such vessels from the Dutch yard in 2017.

The Quebec owner of 35 ferries announced the latest order Wednesday and expects the "island-class" ships to enter service in 2022.

The company, also known as BC Ferries, in June 2017 awarded a contract to Damen to build two "first-in-class" ferries able to carry 44 cars and 300 passengers and crew each.
