A major revamp of the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is set to be launched in the New Year.

Contributing time charter averages will in future be 40% capesize, 30% panamax and 30% supramax.

It is being recommended that the handysize time charter average be removed from the BDI. The panamax and supramax weightings increase by 5%.

A circular to Baltic Exchange members seeking comments says the changes follow a review of all its dry indices and assessments in terms of route description, individual weightings and balance between the Atlantic and Pacific basins.
