Novatek is considering installing LNG ship-to-ship equipment on the Arc7 ice-breaking LNG carriers for its Yamal LNG project to maximise the use of the specialised vessels along the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

Industry sources said the Russian energy company's idea is to use the kit to transship cargoes near Murmansk for westbound shipments during winter when the NSR cannot be used.

This would save time over sending the Arc7 vessels into northern European terminals for such operations and would free up the 15 ships to make shorter trips in and out of Yamal’s terminal at Sabetta, where their ice-breaking capabilities are required.
