American Steamship Co turned a jump in first quarter profit, despite its annual winter break.

GATX Corporation, the company's Chicago-based, New York-traded parent, reported the Jones Act bulker owner brought in $2.5m for the first three months of 2018.

That came even though its ships are in winter lay-up from mid-January through late March.

The figure is an improvement from the $800,000 profit American Steamship posted last year.
