Environmental group World Wildlife Fund has found what it calls "gaping holes" in oilspill response capabilities in Canada's Arctic region.

The WWF-Canada report says that Canadian Coast Guard response plans for the region rely on capabilities that do not exist or are inadequate in Arctic communities that would be on the front lines of any battle against a spill.

"It is not right that these communities should bear the heavy consequences of a ship-based oil spill and not be given the tools and training necessary to limit the damage,"said Andrew Dumbrille, WWF-Canada's senior specialist for sustainable shipping.
