None of the 16 crew members taken into custody by Iran over alleged fuel smuggling are Malaysian, according to local media reports.

Malaysia's foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah confirmed Thursday said none of his compatriots were involved in the incident.

"The ship and people on board have no links to Malaysia," he said, according to the New Straits Times.

"None of the 16 men are Malaysians, the ship is not registered in Malaysia and is not owned by a Malaysian.
